When a client deducts TDS

Client deducted TDS from your payment? Here's how to handle it

You raised an invoice for ₹50,000 and ₹5,000 came in short — that's TDS, not a short payment. BillForge records it against the invoice and generates the Form 16A certificate data your client should be issuing you.

Sound familiar?

!

A payment lands short and you're not sure if it's TDS, a bank fee, or a mistake.

!

You don't know which TDS section or rate your client should have applied.

!

At return time, your own numbers don't obviously tie back to what shows in Form 26AS.

!

Chasing a client for their Form 16A certificate takes weeks.

How BillForge handles it

Record TDS on the payment

When you log a payment, add the TDS the client deducted — BillForge shows the cash-received-plus-TDS split against the invoice total, so nothing looks 'short' by mistake.

Your own Form 16A data, ready

Generate Form 16A certificate data for any financial year and quarter, per client — one place to see exactly what TDS you're owed credit for, without waiting on the client to send it.

Ties to what you'll see in 26AS

The TDS you record against each payment is what your books expect to match against Form 26AS at return time — so a mismatch is something you catch in minutes, not months later.

Works whatever the section

Freelancers and consultants get TDS deducted under different sections (194J, 194C and others) depending on the client — BillForge doesn't assume one rate, you record what was actually applied.

Questions

Why did my client only pay part of the invoice amount?▾

If they deducted TDS (Tax Deducted at Source), that's normal — they're required to withhold a percentage and deposit it with the government on your behalf, then give you credit for it in Form 26AS. The 'missing' amount isn't lost; it counts toward your own income tax.

How do I know how much TDS should have been deducted?▾

It depends on the nature of the service and the section your client applies (commonly 194J for professional/technical services, 194C for contract work) — check the rate on your invoice or ask your client which section they used.

Does BillForge generate Form 16A for me?▾

BillForge generates the Form 16A certificate DATA based on the TDS you've recorded — for TDS your client deducted from you, your client is the one who formally issues the certificate. BillForge's own vendor-side certificates cover TDS you deduct from people you pay.
